How to draw a manga - Cartoon

Share:
When you read a manga and get impressed or get courage, you want to be a manga artist or draw a manga! That passion is very important. With that passion, cartoons can be drawn by anyone. So, this time I would like to introduce the basic way of drawing manga. Introducing it will be the analog method that has not changed since ancient times, but I think it is also useful for digital people. That's because what you do is the same, just changing tools. Professionals and beginners alike. Learn how to draw manga and draw funny manga!

There are two ways to draw comics

A manga artist must be able to tell a story and draw a picture. The original work and the drawing may be separated, but it is basic to do both. Let's explain these two in detail!

1. How to draw cartoon pictures

First, let's explain how to draw a manga picture. What I introduce here is not how to draw a picture, how to draw a body, how to draw a face, how to draw a background, etc. It is a method of making a manuscript to put characters and lines. Basically, the more you draw, the better the picture itself, so you just need to draw anyway. You've seen the paintings in one volume of Slam Dunk, Attack on Titan, One Piece, Kinnikuman, and manga, and the ones in the latter volume completely different. Cartoonists paint for hours every day. It is proof that you will be better if you draw a lot.

Rather, what you need to know is how the manga manuscript is made!

To summarize briefly, the process of making a manga is:
  1. Thinking a story
  2. Draw a name
  3. Draft
  4. Insert a pen (clean copy)
  5. To finish
It is divided into five processes. Digital people work on all or some of this with a personal computer.

Among them, how to create a story will be explained at the very end because the volume is large. So let's start with the "name".

1. First name

First, let's start assuming you have a story in your head. We had an interesting story! Let's draw on the manuscript immediately! However, comics should not be written on manuscript paper immediately. First, draw a “name”. A name is a cartoon drawn easily. It is like a blueprint of a cartoon, and the layout of frames, lines, and characters is roughly written. By creating a name first, you balance the whole, check consistency, and check for hints.

↓ This is the name. Not graffiti. The picture is rough, but you can see how the pieces are split, how the lines are included, how the characters are arranged. I wrote the rules for dividing frames in detail here, so please come back later. > A textbook with 100% comic strip layout

The degree of roughness of the picture varies from person to person. The picture is very appropriate in my case. I guess there are many people who are as rough as me, but I've seen people at the level of this actual picture. You may not be able to image yourself unless you write a little, but in such a case, I think that you can write it. However, I think that it will be rewritten many times, so it is OK with the minimum necessary. Depending on the person, write about 10 times and discard it for 36 pages. The purpose of the name is to complete the layout of the frames and the arrangement of the lines, so if it is achieved, the picture is appropriate. However, if you want to show your name to others, such as editors, you need to be able to identify the character at least and read the lines, so if your name is something that only you can understand, the name to show to people is You just have to rewrite it neatly. Also, it is important to play the page when you want to see it.

Some people make plots and notes before the name. Some people will write in writing. You can make a name for your name. This is a trial and error process for yourself. Please refer to this for details on how to draw names.

Then I'll write on the manuscript paper, but before that, let's look at the manuscript and other tools.

● This is the tool!

The tools used for comics are basically paper and pen. And a ruler. If you have these three, you can write anything. I think the lack of these tools is one of the charms of comics. With all these tools, you can express any epic story! The manuscript is space! A digital person is a PC. Either way, your work will be completed with your brain and arms.

The cartoon drawing is written on the manuscript paper with pen and ink. Pens include G pens, round pens, and school pens. The round pen can draw fine and delicate lines. It is said that the school pen has the strongest expression, and the G pen has the most expressive power. Many gorgeous cartoonists, such as Akira Toriyama, Eiichiro Oda, and Naoki Urasawa, have many G pens. The expressive power of digital is infinite, but there is a weak point that it becomes a line that is calculated too much instead of being able to do anything, and I feel that analog is still strong enough to be able to add accidental ally.

↓ This is the G pen line. You can draw lines of various thicknesses. I noticed this time, but in the case of a dip pen, it does not stain the paper even if you put the pen tip on the paper and leave it for a long time! If it is magic, it will seep. It is okay if you get lost in the line and attach the pen tip to the paper.

Both the G pen and other pens have a pen (the part to hold) and a pen tip (the metal part), and they are used together. The pen tip is a consumable item, and will lose sharpness as you use it. If you can no longer draw the line you want, replace only the pen tip.

Recently, of course, there are many digital environments. ↓ Clip studios are the mainstream. Please take a look as it will be pasted. It is quite expensive compared to paper and pen, but if you only have this, you do not need a manuscript, pen, or tone, so it may be cheap in the long run.

By the way, I decided to move to a digital environment and was frustrated in a day. It is not always suitable for you (once or twice), so rather than paying a lot of money from the beginning, it is also recommended to try free software by trying it first. ↓ This is a free manga that can be made almost from 1

Use the pen with ink. Then the ink penetrates into the notch of the pen tip and you can draw. Unlike a felt-tip pen or a millipen, the amount that can be drawn at one time is not so large, so I will add ink many times and draw. Ink ink is the most reasonable ink, but it has a weak point that it dries poorly. It dries quickly and does not become thin even when rubbed with an eraser. Some people use securities inks.

Then write on the manuscript paper. Manuscript paper is not ordinary paper, but rather thick and durable paper. Scratch on pens and pencils, moisture in ink, eraser rubbing, etc. must be able to withstand harsh use, so flappy paper is useless. By the way, I was scolded a long time ago when I wrote it on copy paper instead of manuscript paper because it was cheap and easy to write. There were many people who couldn't help writing on copy paper, so they couldn't be seen by other editors. Well, it is difficult to handle with copy paper. In the old days, I wrote on drawing paper and Kent paper, but now paper is also developing, so it would be better to draw a special manuscript. ↓ This is a special manuscript paper.

The special manuscript paper has a memory, does not smear the ink and is very easy to use. Drawing borders without memory is very painful.

The rest is a ruler for drawing borders and effect lines. It is not special and can be an ordinary ruler.

By the way, when drawing a line with a pen, it is recommended to use it upside down. It's a quiet technique, but it's pretty important, and it never fails at first because no one tells me.

Using the ruler as it is, if there is too much ink or the pen pressure is too high, it will fail like this. It is okay if you write gently and carefully, but if you relax a little, it will be like this. If you are worried, use the ruler upside down.

Turning it upside down means creating a space between the ruler and the paper. The ruler in the picture is a bit special, but you can do the same with a regular ruler because the memory is cut diagonally.

2, Then draft

Let's return to the process again. When the name is over, divide the frames into manuscript paper and draft. We have already considered how to divide the frames by name, so we will divide them accordingly. For the draft, let's draw a picture of a level where a pen can be inserted.

3, Next is a pen!

When the draft is over, insert the pen. It's difficult to draw the line you want with a brush! At the same time, it is very difficult to draw the line you want with a pen. However, when the pen can be used, the expressive power becomes very high. There is only practice.

4, Finish

The last step is finishing. I erase the draft line, make it solid and white, paste a tone, and bring the manuscript to completion. If you are a professional, you will often touch the assistant from the finish. For amateurs, of course, you have to do it yourself! If you can't do this, you can't be an assistant. And some move from finishing to digital work.

There are several steps in finishing, so let's look at them in order.

Eraser

Use the eraser to erase the pencil line. If the line thickness is not enough or you have forgotten to write it, make adjustments at this stage. At the time of draft, the picture which was lively with lines of failure and lines of failure may become simple and lonely, but this is your true ability (laugh) It is painful, but you can also face your own ability important. Let's practice again.

Solid

Apply solid color. It seems to be solid because it is painted black. I also use magic and ordinary felt-tip pens. In some cases, ink is applied to the brush. Unlike a line, any tool can be used if it turns black.

Effect line

We will add effect lines.

White & tone

Correct the protruding lines with white or correction fluid. The teachers I went to were all Misunon. There is also a technique called white pen that draws a white line by including white in the pen. In this case, use white lightly.

And paste the tone. The tone is the gray part in the comic. Films with tints printed on them are stickers that adhere when pressed. These two processes, I do digitally. Digital said he was frustrated, but the finish is different!

After finishing, it is finally completed!

● How long does it take to finish one page?

It takes about 8 hours to draw a manga manuscript alone. (This time it was 4 hours because speed was important and background and others were quite omission.) Pros are faster because there is an assistant. There is also a way to use digital after the finishing process, in which case I think that the time can be further shortened.

Manga is made this way. It is a very difficult task. But you can if you like! Work with passion! Please tolerate my poor manuscript! Lol

2. How to make a comic story

Now, don't be satisfied with this. As I wrote at the beginning, comics are stories and pictures. Story is also important in comics. I think that the fun of comics is 70% of stories and 30% of pictures. So how can you make an interesting story?

How you create a story is up to you, and what you find interesting is up to you. So you might think that there is no fun in any story, but that is a mistake. There are ways to make everyone feel interesting. That is "change of mindset". Suppose the character thinks at the beginning of the story, "This world is just bad guys." That's when you have a lot of experience in the story, and by the end of the story, your mind changes to "some people are good in the world." This is a change in mindset.

Based on this change, it is an interesting story that the world view, settings and events occur.

The type of story can be broadly divided into the following two types depending on whether the way of thinking changes is the main character or a character other than the main character.

1. "Growth story" that changes the way the hero thinks

For example, the protagonist initially believes that he has no power. However, there is hidden power, or gaining strength through efforts, the mindset changes to "I can do it myself" and overcomes some difficulties. Such a story is a growth story.

2. "The Hero Story" that changes the way of thinking other than the main character

If the non-hero changes, the hero is unchanged. For example, a character other than the protagonist (hereinafter referred to as a sub-protagonist) thinks at the beginning that "I am not worth it." However, the hero finds and influences the value of the sub-hero. Then they change their mindset to "I have value" and confront difficulties. The story in which the hero plays an active role is the hero story. (There is a reason why the sub protagonist did not "go over difficulties" instead of "going over difficulties."

There are various stories in the world, but basically there are only these two. If this change in mindset is expressed, we can guarantee some fun. Of course, the elements of fun are not only changes in thinking, but also characters, settings, scenes, and developments. If those elements are interesting, they can be realized without any change in mindset, but they require high quality ideas and inspiration.

An obvious example is suspense. The elements of fun of suspense vary, but the most important is the fun of tricks and reasoning. However, in the climax of the story, there is always a scene that says, "He hated and killed him, but it was a bad thing, sorry." The perpetrator's thinking has changed. Without this change, no matter how tricky the tricks are, you'll get a light read.

Although it is not a manga, Ukyo Sugishita's drama "Aibo" puts a cut on the criminal at the end. The culprit does not only regret or convert, but shows the right values by declaring the culprit's wrong thinking to be wrong in the structure of the story. So the viewer is refreshing.

If there are so many stories in the world, novel ideas are hard to come up with, but changes in human thinking are unbiased and there is no problem even if it is the same as other works. So it can be said that anyone can make a change in mindset. So it's a shortcut to an interesting story to start with a change in mindset and then add other elements.

In addition to thinking, another important factor is "case resolution." If you want to find out more about resolving the case and the skeleton and flesh of the story, please refer here.
