Draw stones and rocks

Among natural objects, minerals such as stones and rocks are often found following trees. It's not very main, but if you're drawing a background, it might be unnatural if you don't roll one or two.

Is it such a rock or stone, but do you get an unnatural shape when you try to draw the stone or rock first, or do you not get a good shadow? This time I will explain how to draw such stones and rocks.

Read shape

You cannot draw anything without reading the shape. First, I will explain the shape (contour) of stones and rocks. Stones and rocks are basically not in any form. There are round shapes and square shapes.

However, the story changes when it comes to illustrations. What shape do you think is appropriate for recognizing it as a stone?

Let's look at a simple line drawing. Which did you feel are closer to stones or rocks? Does n’t it look like it ’s square? I can see that the round one looks like a potato. In other words, it ’s easier to recognize the stones and rocks as crisp as possible.

For natural objects, randomness is important, but what about stones and rocks?

Certainly, I feel like a slightly rattling line is better than a straight line, but it doesn't seem to be as important. The most important thing for stones and rocks is how to shade and the texture.

What is the texture of stones and rocks?

It is faster to actually pick up the stone to check and see the texture. There are noise-like textures that are mixed with fine particles, and there are textures that feel like they contain minerals. I can't say which is better, but I can draw the stones and rocks of the illustrations closer to the real thing by properly describing this texture.

However, such a texture is not something that can be drawn overnight. The recommended method is to apply textures such as stones and rocks. There are many free textures for stones and rocks, so you can choose from them and apply them to the stones and rocks you have drawn.

An example of a texture. This method will be explained in the section on how to draw.

How to draw stones and rocks

Take atari

First, take a hit. Let's draw while thinking what kind of stones and rocks are good. This time I will draw a slightly squared stone in the above line drawing.

Make the groundwork

Make the groundwork. The contour is later corrected with an eraser to give a random feeling, so let's leave it for a while and start with the shadow.

Taking shadows

Since it may be difficult to understand how the shadows will appear, it is a good idea to draw an image of atari in the stone. (No problem even if appropriate)

Draw shadows and highlights

After deciding on the light source, draw shadows and highlights using a brush that can be painted in thick paint, such as a brush pen or marker. The location of the shadow / highlight is easy to understand if you imagine the box as I drew earlier. The trick is not to paint highlights and shadows, but to paint with an image that creates moderate unevenness.

Put bumpy

The painting method is an image of how the box is painted. The surface of the box that is exposed to light is very bright, and the part in contact with the surface is very dark.

If you feel like it, try putting a little bump. To the extent that this does not change. When drawing a cliff, it is strange that the sides are smooth, so let's do our best to bump it. I have n’t put much this time.

Emphasize bright areas

Switch to the Pencil tool and highlight the brightest part of the highlight surface. Even the box is brightest at the end. That image.

Crack

Stones and rocks may have cracks. Draw with pencil tools or markers as necessary. The cracks are made to behave like a beard appropriately using the darkest shade color. If you get cracks, you ’ll get highlights so do n’t forget.

Create uneven coating

Uneven paint is applied to each surface. It's dirty if you look closely, but it's okay if you look beautiful at a distance, so let's dare to put a color with a marker. I'll do my best until I'm satisfied with the quality.

Sharpen with an eraser

The contour of the rock and stone is erased and erased while creating a random feeling with the rubber.

Emphasize shadows

I don't care so much this time, but it's better to emphasize the shadow if it's a deeply dug rock. Place the color in the darkest place with a pencil and blur it with a watercolor brush. At this time, create a new layer and draw it in multiplication mode.

Apply a texture

Finally, apply the texture. You don't have to do this. Simply place a texture such as a rock with a clipping mask, multiply, overlay, dodge, etc. Make adjustments by tampering with transparency.
