[How to draw efficiently] Trees and rocks drawn in silhouette

Share:
I have to hurry to make illustrations, but I'm lost in the background...! Recommended for those who want to omit the background drawing time! We will explain how to draw trees and rocks using the “draw with silhouette” technique, which allows you to save background production time while being orthodox.
When creating illustrations at work, you must draw within a limited time.

For this reason, if you know how to omit and draw properly, you can draw a gorgeous background quickly and efficiently.

In this course, we will introduce efficient “how to draw trees” and “how to draw rocks”.

Learn the “drawing silhouette” technique, one of the orthodox background creation methods.

How to draw a tree

① Make a brush in the shape of a leaf (Photoshop)

First, create a “leaf” brush. Make a leaf like the picture below.

1. Make a leaf silhouette

Draw a leaf silhouette on a new layer of about 300 x 300 pixels. This shape becomes the shape of the brush as it is.

2.Register to brush

Select the range you want to make a brush, and set the name of the brush with "Edit> Define Brush". Press “OK” to save the brush.

3. Change the brush settings

Detailed settings for the leaf brush in the "Brush" window
  • 150% of “Spacing” in “Brush tip shape” item
  • 20% “angle jitter” in the “shape” item
Change to. Adjust the color of the leaves while changing the color and opacity.

② Draw a tree in silhouette

From here, I will introduce how to draw trees.

1.Draw an outline with solid black

First, draw a silhouette of the tree. For the leaf part, you can use the leaf brush created above to draw an outline.

2. Use a brush with blurred feet to shade

Lock transparent pixels in the silhouette layer (opacity protection) and add color and shading with a blurry brush. The point to draw is to add a three-dimensional feel to the moco moco with awareness of the lump of leaves.

3. Add detail with leaf-shaped brush

Set another layer on top and set a clipping mask (clipping mask on the bottom layer), then draw a leaf using a leaf brush.

4. Create a shadow by duplicating the leaf layer

Duplicate the leaf layer you drew earlier, lock the transparent pixels and repaint with black or gray, then transform it into a shadow.

Finally, set the layer to multiplication mode or lower the opacity to make the shadows transparent.

Next, I will introduce “How to draw rocks”. Let's challenge rocks by simply taking the silhouette shape and drawing it in a simplified manner.

How to draw rocks

① Draw silhouettes of the ground and rocks

Prepare two layers and draw a silhouette of the ground and rock on each.

Any shape, such as round rock, vertical, flat, etc., will be rock, so you can draw freely.

However, it is important to draw with a certain degree of three-dimensionality.

② Add a shadow to create a three-dimensional effect

Adds a shadow to the silhouette to create a three-dimensional effect.

The trick is:
  • Rough light and dark to capture a rough solid (black text)
  • Light and dark to capture fine irregularities on the surface (white text)

It is to use properly.

Basic 3D effect

Light is important for expressing a three-dimensional effect.
  • Direct light
  • Reflected light
Let's suppress two kinds of light.

Using this motif as an example, direct light and reflected light can be visualized as follows.
Because light is scattered when reflected, the reflected light is darker than direct light.

Colors according to the surrounding color of the reflected light (ambient light).

③ Add details and finish

Draw details to express the texture.

The light and dark borders are most noticeable because the light strikes at a shallow angle.

Therefore, detail is prepared by drawing the unevenness finely.

In addition, we consider small rocks as “small rocks” and the ground as “flat rocks” as well.

In addition, the large shadows that the rocks drop are drawn on a separate layer, and the opacity is lowered to express through the ground.

Draw fine pebbles scattered on the ground with a separate layer.

Summary of know-how useful for background production

What did you think.

Mastering the background will help reduce production time if you learn the flow of drawing.
