Three-dimensional eye drawing course

The illustrator miyuli explains how to draw the eye, which is full of useful knowledge such as the actual movement of the eyeball and the mechanism of the facial muscles that move the eyebrows, along with detailed drawings. By being conscious of the round shape of the eyeball, not only real people but also deformed character illustrations have a presence and persuasive power. Please refer to the expression of expressive eyes!

Eye position

Eyes are a useful tool for measuring facial balance.

In the case of a typical adult face, the eyes and eyes are half the height of the face.

When viewed from the front, there is a gap between the eyes, where there is another eye, and there is a gap between the eyes and the face outline.

*This distance may appear shorter due to bangs or sideburns!

The human face is not completely symmetrical, so you don't have to worry about being symmetrical.

When drawing a picture, let's adjust it while confirming it with the left-right reverse display so that it looks natural.

In addition, when looking at the face from the side, the eyes in the eye socket (cancer or indentation of the skull where the eyeball fits) appear to tilt down.

Even the face of deformed characters like illustrations and manga is based on the balance of the actual human face, so the ratio shown above may be used as is.

Even if your eyes are greatly deformed, if you recognize them as three-dimensional objects, you can imagine from various angles.

Appearance from various angles

If you draw an angled face with your eyes aligned side by side, your face will appear flat.

Because the face is slightly curved, the eyes look diagonal.

The shape of the eye changes not only with the face angle but also with the movement of the pupil.

To express the movement dynamically, there is no problem even if the eyes are slightly broken.

The pupil is moving on a spherical surface, not on a plane.

When drawing a person at an angle seen from an angle, it is important to imagine an “eye that moves on a spherical surface”.

Be aware of the thickness of your eyelids.

In the case of deformed illustrations, I think that some anatomical parts will be omitted, but it still needs to be moved like a real eye in order to give the eyes a three-dimensional effect.

If a person turns further from the side, only the eyebrows and eyelashes will be visible.

If you rotate it further, the distance between your eyes and nose will disappear.

This strengthens the impression that the orientation of the head has changed, and you can see that it is just before the face turns completely back.

Put an expression on the eyes

When putting an expression on your eyes, imagine an “eye mask with eyebrows and eyes”.

When you imagine an eye mask, you can easily imagine it from various angles, and you can think about it all together without moving the elements around your eyes apart.

By linking the eyes and the elements around it, the intended emotion can be easily read.

The eyebrows are a very powerful tool for expressing emotions.

Although it looks somewhat deformed, it sometimes draws eyebrows with exaggerated expressions.

The eyebrows make a strong impression when they are close to the eyes.

Tensioning and relaxing your eyes before and after this eyebrow movement will further enhance the effect.

Facial muscles are your important ally! Even with a little awareness, you can make your facial expression impressive in an instant.

By emphasizing the expression a little, such as bringing elements close together or squeezing them together, it becomes a lively picture, not a lifeless picture like a copy of a photo.

POINT
  • Be careful not to show too much of the white eye area around your eyes.
  • Increase the area of white eyes when people are surprised, scared or in danger.
  • Inappropriate usage can make people look strange and make you feel uncomfortable.

Various eye shapes

There are various forms of eyes.

It is better to avoid symmetric eye shapes, as they will move and become simpler.

Try different eye corners, eye shapes, eyebrows, eyelashes and eyes, and see the eyes and eyebrows as a set rather than separate.

The male eyebrows are usually close to the eyes.

As you get older, it gradually becomes drooping and wrinkles increase more and more.

Let's consider the elements that are really necessary.

For animations with a lot of movement, a simple eye may be better, and for a single illustration or close-up composition, a more detailed description may be necessary.

Imagine that the eyes are closed, even if they are omitted, without connecting the left and right edges of the eyes.

By being conscious of it, you can leave a three-dimensional appearance of the eyes and draw the eyes from various angles.

POINT
  • I try not to spend too much time on my eyes so I can draw the rest of my body.
  • However, when drawing a picture that appeals to emotions, I think it is important to pay attention to your eyes.

About the detailed structure of the eye

The cornea of the eye is a transparent lens that covers the iris and pupil.

This cornea affects the shape of the eye. Pay attention to the position of the pupil when viewed from various angles.

A large pupil indicates that you are looking far away or trying to adapt to a dark environment.

A small pupil indicates that you are in bright light or looking at something nearby.

Point for painting eyes

The way you paint your eyes changes according to the lighting environment and the style you want to do.

Please refer to the four basic steps in the diagram below.

By highlighting white eyes darkly, the highlights will be emphasized.

Sometimes you may find it interesting to experiment, such as “trying out different color accents” or “softening the edge of the pupil softly or painting it hard”.

I hope this tutorial is helpful.
