Block-In Drawing Method Part I

Share:
Beginners take the shape of objects while drawing thin lines. I'm not saying this is bad. I'm teaching you in a more efficient and accurate way since I came to the classroom.

This is called block-in.

You may be confused at first because you do not measure the length of the motif so much and draw it while measuring the tilt. However, it will be very useful in the future as you get used to it quickly and accurately.

Benefits of block-in
  • Because the envelope of the entire motif is made first, it can be prevented from protruding from the screen.
  • Since the shape is made for each block, it is difficult for some parts to become extremely large or small.
  • Strong against shortened shapes.

It is easy to draw long legs because the stereotype of “legs are long and narrow” gets in the way. However, drawing with this block-in makes it possible to accept the foot as a simple two-dimensional shape.

This block-in was introduced on the “How to Shape” page, but this time I would like to show you with a simple demonstration.

1. Create the outer frame of the motif

Add a dot at the outermost transition and connect with a straight line.

This large outer frame is called an envelope.

2. Find a point that takes a shape

Catch as large lump as possible in a straight line.

3. Make a big block.

Ignore the small changes in the shape and draw a straight line.

* If the shape of the large block is out of order, the small shape cannot be taken accurately.

4. Subdivide the blocks

Take the shape inside the big block made in STEP3.

The shape of the shadow is also a hint, so you can proceed while drawing.

Shortened form

Let's delve a little more about the benefits of block-in that I mentioned at the beginning. There are many cases where things appear to be shortened.

In my image, the belief that "it should be longer!" Gets in the way, and it's much longer than you can see.

However, by recognizing shortened motifs as simple two-dimensional shapes by block-in, you can control your desire to grow longer.

It is a later work to convert the motif to 3D. First of all, the outline is a complete two-dimensional world.

Legs with red parts visible.
If you take the slope of the yellow solid line accurately, control will be applied, "Draw your feet below here!"
The desire to stretch out shortened legs will be braked.
Importance of the shape of the ground plane
Notice the triangle surrounded by the yellow solid and dotted lines.
This shows how much the motif looks down.
・ When looking down greatly
The position of a moves downward
・ When the motif and eye height are the same
The position of a is almost the same as the dotted line of position b

Knowledge and conviction are the major hurdles when taking shape. This knowledge and belief is very useful for a smooth life, but it often gets in the way when drawing. The belief is often different from the observed motif. The difference between what you imagined and what you drew is the stress of drawing. This is the best part of the drawing. Drawing is a way to nurture the eyes of a painter who can throw away the prejudice and prejudice and draw the things he sees purely. This kind of attitude will give you a different perspective on things that have been prejudiced in your personal life and will enrich your sensibility. Let's forget the name of the motif. There are only things that can be seen in the light.
